Hunter Gumboots or Hunter Wellies are know for their vulcanized rubber products for over 150 years. Produced by Hunter Limited as one of the oldest manufacturers of rubber boots in England, even the world.

It was back in 1817 that gumboots first made its appearance. It was first worn by soldiers in WW 1 & 2 but farmers seem to make use of it as well. They tall rubber boots have been helping soldiers and farmers occupy those difficult terrains of mud, water and snow for almost 200 years!

The industry started when Mr. Henry Lee Norris and his friend Spencer Thomas Parmelee landed in Scotland to work out a patent of Charles Goodyear for the manufacturing of Indian rubber shoes and boots.The duo begin to operate in the summer of 1856, with the company named as Norris & Co., which later became the North British Rubber Company after the first limited liability act was conducted and finally became Hunter Limited after a series of changed ownerships throughout its history.

North British Rubber Company not only made rubber boots, but also produced tires, conveyors, combs, golf balls, and rubber flooring. It was not until the advent of World War i when the company was asked by war office to dramatically produce sturdy boots that are suitable for flooded terrains. The boots were known as Wellington Boots. It was an object of envy by the German Soldiers and its dependability showed a decent contribution in the success of the British army. It was because of that Hunter gumboots were again asked to be supplied for World War II.

By the end of the war Hunter Gumboots had become popular among men, women and children for wear in wet weather. The boot had developed to become far roomier with a thick sole and rounded toe. Also, with the rationing of that time, laborers began to use them for daily work.

North British Rubber company was bought by Uniroyal Limited in 1966, a manufacturer of car tyres that still operates as of today. The company saw another change in ownership in 1986 as Uniroyal was purchased by the Gates Rubber Company which became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tomkins plc in 1996. Recognizing the need to strengthen and build upon its positions in its core engineering markets, Tomkins began a process of streamlining its activities by disposing of a number of businesses during the period 1998-2001. In 1999, Tomkins plc sold the Consumer and Industrial Division of The Gates Rubber Company to Interfloor, the country’s largest carpet underlay manufacturer. The company became the Hunter Division of Interfloor. The leverage of transactions throughout the year for the Hunter Division has attracted a group of investors which later acquired the Division and named it Hunter Rubber Company.

After experiencing cash flow problems in 2006, a private consortium who were the previous shareholders of Hunter Rubber Company, bought Hunter out of administration which marks the birth of the now known Hunter Boot Ltd. Yes, the women’s boots are expensive but just like the men’s boots we purchased, they were of high quality and these women’s boots were under $300 and they were comfortable and stylish. These boots are still in good shape today after 6 months of wear. I know I will get at least 2 seasons out of them or more. The style of these boots will never go out of fashion, as they are simplistic yet elegant.

We all like trendy footwear and, apart from a few of the most extreme styles, most of us like to follow the fashion that is seen on the catwalks of Paris and the like. However, a little closer to home, there are some rather unusual styles in sports footwear coming to the fore. These are called finger shoes and they actually look like gloves for the feet. Some world-class athletes are now realizing the benefits of running barefoot and one of the latest champions did just that. However, most of us run on the front of the feet or on the midline and this can cause some damage in the heel and shins too. This style of footwear encourages us all to run properly but gives us that freedom from the heavy trainers that we have become used to.

Gumboots and waders, on the other hand, have not really been in fashion at all of late. However, there is a selection available online which even those at the forefront of fashion will want to wear. Made from rubberized material to keep them water tight, this stylish footwear is not only versatile, it looks good too.

In fashion, footwear will come and go and the heel heights always differ from season to season. But what most women should consider is the damage that is being done to their feet for the sake of looking fashionable. Of late, the higher heels have dictated that some styles have a wedge on the sole too, but this can make walking a rather dangerous affair.

Of course, we will all take that risk when we want to look glamorous, but we do have to consider what will happen to us later on in our lives when our backs and bone structures start to complain about the treatment that we gave them when we were younger and more foolish.

The Hunter Valley is a popular weekend destination for Sydneysiders

If you are a wine lover, you are already familiar with the Hunter Valley in New South Wales. Together with the Barossa Valley in South Australia, the Hunter has made Australian wines famous. This was not an overnight accomplishment, though. The fascinating history of wine growing in the Hunter Valley goes all the way back to colonial times.

Lieutenant John Shortland stumbled across the Hunter River in 1797 while looking for escaped convicts. While he did not find the convicts he was looking for, he did find a verdant valley rich in natural resources. Shortland spread the word about the Hunter Valley and as soon as land access to the region was established, settlers started planting vines: by 1823, over twenty acres were already planted.

Some of the most prominent names in early Hunter Valley viticulture were George Wyndham, James King and William Kelman.

However, James Busby, an amateur viticulturist, was arguably the biggest influence on the valley’s future. After two study tours in Europe, Busby returned with over 500 vine cuttings. Many experts credit Busby as the man most responsible for turning the Hunter Valley into a major wine growing region.

James Busby had a sister named Catherine. She fell in love with and married William Kelman. Many of Kelman’s first vines were some of those brought over by Busby. Others followed suit and by 1840, there were over 500 acres of vines in the Hunter Valley. Before the turn of the century, many of the most famous names in Hunter Valley wines were already established, including Dr. Henry Lindeman and the Tyrell, Wilkenson and Drayton families.

Two World Wars and the Depression hampered the development of the wine industry in the Hunter Valley, but it made up for lost time in the 1960s. In that era of increased prosperity, the dry table wines that the Hunter Valley produced became popular. The sixties were also a period of expansion in the Hunter. After over a century of domination by a handful of growers, Dr. Max Lake set the stage for the future when he started Lake’s Folly in 1963. His success led to the establishment of dozens of other boutique wineries. Today, there are over 120 wine producers in the Hunter Valley.

After road improvements from Sydney were completed, the Hunter Valley vineyards became a popular tourist destination. Today, along with wine, the region has become one of the major entertainment centers of New South Wales. The largest wineries compete with each other to offer the most in-demand Australian and international artists. There are regular food, wine and music festivals in the region and a number of family attractions, such as the Hunter Gardens, have been established.

Of course, they also began to establish places for all those new visitors to stay. Whether you are a large family towing a caravan or packing tents, a couple on your honeymoon or a businessperson attending a convention, there is a Hunter Valley accommodation made for you. If you’re an overseas visitor, you won’t be left out, either. Transportation from just about anywhere in Australia to the Hunter Valley is readily available and package deals can be arranged to suit any budget.
